Origen. You probably know that Mother's Day is always celebrated on the first Sunday in May and you have this date firmly in mind to congratulate your mother - but do you also know the origin of this Memorial Day? We would like to tell you the historical background so that you can surprise your family with your knowledge about this special day. The first thing you should know about this is that the first Sunday in May is not a date that is internationally fixed although Mother's Day is mostly celebrated on that day. Looking back, since ancient times tributes were paid to the mother figure: in Egypt, in Greece, in the Roman Empire... but in order to know the background of the current celebration we have to look to the United States. In 1870, activist Julia Ward organized a peace march inviting all mothers who had suffered the consequences of the Civil War. In the following years, this day of remembrance was followed up until Ana Jarvis wanted to introduce an official day of remembrance throughout the country in 1908, which coincided with the anniversary of the death of her mother. 6 years later, in 1914, the President of the United States officially declared this day a national day of remembrance. In Spain it was celebrated every 8th December, coinciding with the feast of the Immaculate Conception. In order to separate these two commemoration days, in 1965 Mother's Day was moved to May.
